Blackle
You will have noticed that my blog has a dark background, I didn’t realise until recently how environmentally friendly that makes me.
The US department of Energy claim that a computer displaying a white screen uses 75 watts of power, while a black screen uses 59 watts. So they set up Blackle which is a black version of Google. It doesn’t have all the features that Google has, but for a basic search it does exactly the same job.
My favourite bit is the count on the front page which tells you how many watts have been saved by those who have used the site over using Google. I’ve just checked and they reckon they’ve saved 258kilowatt hours of electricity. That’s just a little less than my quarterly electricity bill.
The more people use it the greater that figure will become. So think about that when you next need to search the internet.
