Fall and Winter by Jon Foreman

I’ve just bought two EPs by Jon Foreman called Fall and Winter. Foreman is the lead singer of one of my favourite bands, Switchfoot so I was eager to hear what his solo project was going to be like.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised, there are none of the high tempo air guitar inducing songs from Switchfoot but a more thoughtful collection of acoustic ballads. It really brings out the best in his voice, which is haunting at times. I also really appreciated the lyrics where he shares from his faith in God. Much of Switchfoot’s more recent work has had spiritual undertones and calls us to examine what life’s about but it’s different to some of their earlier work which gets more to the heart of the matter.

On the Fall disc the song Equally Skilled speaks in no uncertain terms about man’s imperfections and need for God’s forgiveness and grace. On the Winter disc my favourite song is White as Snow, based on Psalm 51, “Create in me a clean heart oh God, Restore in me the joy of your salvation”

I think that Fall and Winter put more into context what is behind Jon Foreman’s song writing for Switchfoot, namely a desire to share his faith through his music and encourage others to seek God for answers instead of the world. I can’t wait for the Spring and Summer EPs.

So, Fall and Winter gets a thumbs up from me, why don’t you go out and buy it?
